Today there are many ways to celebrate the life which was lived and begin to adjust to the death which has occurred. Memorial services and receptions can be simplified versions of traditional services, or may be designed as something unique.

There are no absolute standards for non-traditional service. We encourage and help you to be as imaginative as you would like. An experienced funeral director should be willing to help you explore the alternatives which are best for your family. If a funeral director does not show willingness to be flexible and an eagerness to listen to your needs, then you should interview other firms.

Some personalized formats often used are:

a service in a funeral chapel without the casket present
a service or party at a workplace, favorite park, camping spot, etc
a sports event, dinner, art show, or other event that reflects the life and interests of the deceased
an open house at home or at a favorite gathering place
some other kind of gathering by a social group which was closely connected with the deceased

Pictures of the deceased, memorabilia from his or her life, hobby items or mementos may be brought to the place of gathering as a way of focusing on the person being remembered.

At these gatherings family members, friends or an officiant may present a program of reminiscence where people exchange favorite stories of the deceased and reflect on their contributions to family, friends and community.

The important thing is that the event:

speaks directly about the individual life that has been lived
acknowledges the mourning process
acknowledges the death and the loss and adjustment that follows
encourages the expression of feelings
